voltamos nesta quinta para o primeiro “LBM em cartaz” do ano com uma estreia que só pode ser definida como muito d-a-o-ra: filme do Jackie Chan! O enredo, no entanto, traz surpresas.

Para aquecer, vamos assistir a uma cena épica de “Quem Sou Eu?”:

Quando soubemos que o filme do Jackie Chan viria para a LBM, nosso gerente Johnny logo se jogou na frente do projeto e disse que seria ele a traduzir. Logo, seu depoimento é indispensável:

Traduzir um filme do Jackie Chan foi como visitar uma parte da minha infância. Quando moleque, eu vibrava com as estripulias do baixinho chinês em filmes como O Caçador de Encrencas (City Hunter), O Mestre Invencível (Drunken Master) e Arrebentando em Nova York (Rumble in The Bronx). Depois de anos sem contato com a filmografia de Chan, confesso que me surpreendi com a pegada dramática e o tom soturno de O Estrangeiro. Diferente dos personagens que o consagraram, distanciando-se da veia cômica, Chan mostra que ainda tem lenha para queimar e pode surpreender, principalmente quando vai além da pancadaria.”

O que o querido Johnny não contou foi que a parte dramática deu mais trabalho na tradução do que o antecipado! O filme tem um contexto político tão elaborado que até engole a ação em muitos momentos. Esse contexto é desenrolado no enredo pela morte da filha de Chan num atentado terrorista assinado por um grupo dissidente do IRA (será porque ninguém aguenta mais filmes ambientados na Guerra Fria?). Para efeito de tradução, o sotaque irlandês por si só já cria barreiras – no que fomos ajudados pelo roteiro. Foi necessário também entender melhor a história do IRA para fazer escolhas adequadas em relação a termos e tom para o filme.

Falando em xenofobia!

Uma das escolhas mais interessantes para o filme foi a tradução do termo Chinaman. O termo dá nome ao livro que deu origem ao roteiro do filme, que acabou levando o título mais genérico de “O Estrangeiro” (The Foreigner). A troca de título é bem óbvia na sua intenção: não ofender ninguém antes mesmo de o filme começar. Como muito bem colocado pela crítica da Variety, o termo não tem equivalência alguma com outros rótulos de nacionalidade, como Britishman ou Frenchman. No entanto, o termo é usado largamente durante o filme, deixando o tradutor numa situação delicada. A decisão final foi utilizar duas opções de tradução: para os personagens pró-Chan, usamos “chinês”; já quando os anti-Chan o chamavam, era “china”. Mas voltando às surpresas que Jackie Chan nos traz, a verdade é que há muito que não sabemos sobre o ator. Alguém aí sabia que ele já fez um filminho adulto, ou que ele é cantor de ópera? A verdade, no entanto, é que Chan não foi somente visionário ao criar o gênero de comédia com kung-fu. Ele antecipou a moda de hoje já nas décadas de 70 e 80!
